Rick Brown was born in Philadelphia in 1946. He received a B.A. in illustration from the Philadelphia College of Art in 1968. Shortly after graduation, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served with the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam. For the thirty-two years following his military service, he has worked as a freelance illustrator serving clients such as Hallmark, Sesame Street, and numerous publishers of children's books as well as advertisers across the country. His work has been exhibited in the Society of Illustrators Show in New York, and the international design publication Graphis.

In the past few years, his interest has gone back to painting. Much of his inspiration comes from the Bucks County region of Pennsylvania where he and his wife Lynne live and raised their three children.
