Norine Kevolic was born in
Philadelphia, PA in 1952 and raised in Bucks County with her four sisters.
As a child she watched her father, an artist/illustrator, while he
painted religious icons on hollowed-out eggs, to be given to her grandparents
at Easter. Much later, she recognized the important influence the Byzantine
style had on her own work and understood some of the roots of her fascination
with stylized interpretations of the human figure.
The creative environment the sisters shared in their youth was kept
alive and well as each went her way. Norine’s self-directed path has
been focused primarily on painting, drawing in silverpoint, and woodworking.
In addition to studies in anatomy, painting, glassblowing, and woodworking
at Bucks County Community College, she gravitated toward environments
that would help her develop skills, which she would later carry over
into her artwork, such as designing, lettering/carving signs, and gilding.
Many years of work as a cabinetmaker’s assistant provided a further
hands-on education in using tools, wood characteristics, paints and
finishes, designing, frame-making, decorative painting on furniture,
etc.
Norine has exhibited widely throughout the PA and NJ region: Woodmere
Art Gallery in Philadelphia, Phillips Mill, New Century, and Golden
Door Gallery in New Hope, PA and Artsbridge, Riverbank Arts, Atelier
Gallery, and with TAWA in NJ. From these juried shows and galleries
she has received a number of awards for painting and mixed media. In
a 2-artist show entitled “Metalpoint Drawings” she exhibited portraits,
skulls, seashells, gargoyles and landscapes that were drawn with a
silver, copper, or gold stylus on panels that she prepared with a traditional
Renaissance formula. In 2002, at a 2-artist show entitled “Traditions
Old and New” (Atelier Gallery in Frenchtown, NJ) she exhibited a series
of Renaissance-inspired portrait paintings and silverpoints, with frames
of her own design. Her intricate wood mosaics were shown at Prallsville
Mills in Stockton, NJ and “Works in Wood” in Lambertville, NJ – where
she received the Greene and Greene Award. The winter 2002 edition of
Bucks County Town & Country Living Magazine featured her mosaic
work in its “Gallery Profile” section. In late 2003 “Quiet Places”
(Atelier Gallery, Frenchtown, NJ) displayed Norine’s recent works,
which explore the simple beauty of natural objects. In this particular
series she designed the frames to be an integral part of the painting
- wanting the image to “float” rather than be contained by a frame.
Norine resides in Solebury, PA where she has a studio and workshop.
Her work is in many private collections throughout the United States.
I have a studio/workshop in New Hope, PA and have exhibited my silverpoint
drawings, oils/acrylics, wood mosaics and mixed media (acrylic, pencil,
gold leaf) in many galleries throughout the PA-NJ area.
