At age 56, I have worked in
the precision grinding field for 40 years. Approximately 13 years ago,
I decided it was time to rekindle my lifelong ambition to become proficient
in painting with watercolor. I had had no formal instruction in art
since 7th grade.
I studied with two local artists who were at opposite ends of the stylistic
spectrum. First, Marian Warfield who is a somewhat loose impressionistic
artist with a flair for vivid color. Second, Marcia Weikert, a very controlled
artist who paints with photographic accuracy. I feel my style is a composite
of both these people. I try to be very accurate with the focal area of
the picture and then enjoy the freedom to loosen up in the remainder
of the work.
My involvement in painting has given me deeper appreciation for the colors
and intricacies God uses in nature--especially flowers and trees.
I have also been active in woodturning for 13 years and metal sculpture
for 4 years. At present, I'm working on a series of pieces that incorporate
combinations of woodturning, watercolor and metal sculpture.
